Get Down With the Get Down 002

Julio Bashmore is definitely the most talented producer that is out right now.  His new BBC1 Essential Mix is a fresh take on old school Chicago House and more recent tunes influenced by the same guys.

The Hundreds covers a great collection of art pieces by Seattle artist Michael Levitt.  He recreates a host of contemporary artists as figurines.  Dope stuff.

James Blake is the prince of mellow dubstep right now.  He has an interesting interview in the Boston Phoenix, where he takes aim at some of the heavier dubstep acts- most likely, Skrillex.  Although I agree in principle, there is space for both types of artists.

–Rest in Peace, Sylvia Robinson.  I posted about her a few months back here.

–Great interview from the legend, DJ Sneak, one of the dopest and most influential house music creators of all time.  Scroll down for the English version.  Here’s a great mix live in Ibiza that is either from DJ Sneak or Daft Punk- no one is quite clear (they played the same night)- but it’s dope!

–My friend Sasha is town from New York to help organize the PULSE Contemporary Art Fair this weekend in Downtown Los Angeles.  I will be in attendance, it looks amazing!  Support the arts.

Pour It Up

I would like to present to you, my brand new mixtape– SYRUP.  Hopefully this mix will help you forget that summer is over, and bring in fall with a bang.  Thanks to everyone who inspired this, particularly my friends who’ve partied with me all year, and all the great DJs, artists and musicians who gave me a soundtrack for the summer.  Special props goes to my man Matt Powell/Mad Owl who helped me engineer, edit, and mix this beauty so its smooth for your ears.  Also, please join my new Facebook group for new updates.  Another special shout out to the homies at ItGetsYouOff for bringing that heavy electro tech sound!

This Week: Party Crashers

THURSDAY
Secret Special Guest at Versus/Danceism (Central, Santa Monica) — Danceism always brings the heat for their Thursday parties.  Thursday brings a “secret guest” that I’ve gathered is techno heavyweight D. Ramirez.  Watch out for thumping sounds… RSVP
Kurupt, Muggs and Adam12 at AFEX (The Colony, Hollywood) — Strictly hip-hop classics, with DJ/producer Muggs (Cypress Hill) and Kurupt, westcoast legend.
Waldo vs. Partytime at Dance Right (La Cita, Downtown) — Dance Right is the weekly Thursday night party at La Cita.  Always a good time in a nice intimate venue. RSVP

FRIDAY
Sinden at Control (Avalon, Hollywood) — Sinden is the multi-talented wonky electro artist from the UK best known for his track “Beeper,” with Kid Sister.  He was kind of the pioneer of this style so I bet he slays live. RSVP

SATURDAY
Visionquest, Art Department, and Damian Lazarus at Get Lost LA (Music Box, Hollywood) — This group of techno and tech-house monsters have been leading the way in the deep techno sounds as of late.  I saw Visionquest in Detroit and they threw down! Tickets

SUNDAY
Jamie Jones and Lee Foss at Culprit Sessions (Standard LA, Downtown)  – Jamie Jones makes super deep groovers and has recently taken over Ibiza, and along with Lee Foss as Hot Creations, they helped really push the Culprit Sessions off the ground in 2008. RSVP

Move It, Move It

I was lucky enough to attend some great concerts this past weekend, a celebration of my birthday.  This will provide a brief recap, with highlights.  Image above from Dirty Choons.

FRIDAY: Glitch Mob performed with Rjd2 at the Nokia Theatre Downtown.  My friend Sameer won tickets, I had previously never heard Glitch Mob, but they really tore the place down.  A perfect mix of hip-hop and dubstep sounds, this quartet did a fantastic job of pacing their set and bringing in the heavy sounds when necessary.  No chainsaws required.

SATURDAY: The Mad Decent Block Party was a free event hosted downtown by Diplo’s label and featured a wealth of talent.  The set-up of the event was great but the vibe wasn’t really kickin’ until Nadastrom and (a surprise appearance from) Munchi came to bring the Moombahton heat.  The place went wild, I had never seen such a contrast- everyone was packed like sardines for Major Lazer, but Munchi came with serious firepower, including Heartbreak’s “King Kong” and his remix of Dillon Francis’ “Brazzer’s Theme,” blowing the place apart.  Mad Decent has a lot of events in LA, so stay tuned here to find out about upcoming ones.

That night, Making Shapes threw a warehouse party featuring the talents of Simian Mobile Disco, Woolfy, and (thee) Mike B.  I’ve been to a fair amount of warehouse parties Downtown since moving back to L.A., and this one had of the best vibes.  Lots of space, good-looking people, a pool for swimming, and easy access to the bar.  ALL slammin’ house music too, none of that electro bullsh—….Definitely recommend attending their next party.  Check their Facebook page for more info.

SUNDAY: Sade and John Legend performed an amazing live set at the Staples Center.  One can only imagine what this sounded like, and it was truly an experience.  With a nice lady in tow, you can’t help but get in the mood.  Sade takes you there…

You can absolutely never go wrong with M.J.
Michael Jackson – Got to be There (1971)
Michael Jackson – Rock With You (Masters at Work Remix) (1995)
Scottie B – Michael Jackson Medley (2009)

Lookout Weekend

At the end of May, I had the pleasure to attend the Detroit Electronic Music Festival, now known as Movement, in the birthplace of techno- the Motor City.  What was a crazy weekend didn’t really end when I left because the tunes I heard there have dominated my life since.  The MVP juggernaut of the weekend was most definitely Stacey Pullen, who didn’t play the festival but played two after parties I attended.  This 3-hour long mix he did live in Berlin has been in rotation in my whip for the last month.  Strongly strongly recommended for the tech-house/house fans!

Get Down With the Get Down 001

–LA’s most reknowned summertime party, The Do Over, is finishing up the season strong, with appearances from DJ Quik, Nu-Mark, and Jesse Rose.  Here are some live sets from this summer.

–LA’s other bumping poolside party is Swimming With Sharks at the Downtown Standard.  RSVP for upcoming events here and check out the new mixtape they released a month ago.

–Dave Chapelle returns to your screen with his first interview in five years!  Peep Part 1 and Part 2 on Youtube.

On the Youtube tip, check out this rare video of Thomas Bangalter slamming some live Daft Punk tracks in 1996.  Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

–Jay-Z and Kanye’s much hyped and anticipated record together, Watch the Throne, dropped last week.  Read these two hilarious reviews- one from Ghostface Killah and blog champ Da Kid Mero.

–Art gallery iam8bit just opened their new exhibition, “Super iam8bit,” near the Echo Park area.  Open until September 10th.

Ask Yourself

Julio Bashmore is the rising UK house music-producer, making a huge dent in the scene with his fresh take on a few popular sounds of the past.  I have to say I haven’t been as excited about a new musician as I have about this young buck- he really melds strong emotional connections with dance grooves and classic sounds that have been around since the beginnings of house.  His newest EP, Everyone Needs a Theme Tune on PMR Records, has two of my favorite songs of this past year, “Ask Yourself” and “The Horn that Time Forgot.”  Check out one of his remixes below and stay tuned for one of his newer tracks on my upcoming mixtape SYRUP.

Waiting for You

Hi-C was one of DJ Quik‘s early 90s proteges, bringing some Southern California funk just in time for the end of the summer.  It’s funny though, because purports to be a gangster but his songs are pretty goofy and lighthearted.  His album title Skanless shares the same title as one of the most banging tracks on DJ Quik’s Quik is the Name as well.  ”Sittin’ in the Park” and “I’m Not Your Puppet” were two of the oldies-sampling hits that you can still hear on KDAY to this day!
