Pour It Up

I would like to present to you, my brand new mixtape– SYRUP.  Hopefully this mix will help you forget that summer is over, and bring in fall with a bang.  Thanks to everyone who inspired this, particularly my friends who’ve partied with me all year, and all the great DJs, artists and musicians who gave me a soundtrack for the summer.  Special props goes to my man Matt Powell/Mad Owl who helped me engineer, edit, and mix this beauty so its smooth for your ears.  Also, please join my new Facebook group for new updates.  Another special shout out to the homies at ItGetsYouOff for bringing that heavy electro tech sound!

Lookout Weekend

At the end of May, I had the pleasure to attend the Detroit Electronic Music Festival, now known as Movement, in the birthplace of techno- the Motor City.  What was a crazy weekend didn’t really end when I left because the tunes I heard there have dominated my life since.  The MVP juggernaut of the weekend was most definitely Stacey Pullen, who didn’t play the festival but played two after parties I attended.  This 3-hour long mix he did live in Berlin has been in rotation in my whip for the last month.  Strongly strongly recommended for the tech-house/house fans!

Summer Breeze

(thee) Mike B is one of my favorite DJs around because he can really rock any style really well.  He is a resident DJ for Dim Mak’s Cannonball Sundays at Drai’s in Hollywood and Saturdays at the Short Stop for Cheap Pop, in addition to spinning all over town on other nights.  If you’re an aspiring DJ, someone who can do anything behind the decks can be really magnificent to see.
But, just in time for the summer, Mike B formed a group with fellow Cannonball resident DJ Morse Code named POOLS.  Take a guess what their sound evokes.  Here are a few mixes they have put out, and one of my all-time favorites from Mike B, also perfect for the summer- Steady Dippin’.  You can stream or download below.

Shoot the Messenger

Feeling in a real groovy mood today. Maybe it’s that I just finished up another essay (still have two left) but the weather in beautiful Los Angeles is getting me happy. MSFB is a huge disco/funk group from Philly that have worked with such legends such as the O’Jays and The Spinners, among others. Here is an extended edit NYC-house legend Danny Krivit did of one of their really funky tracks. I also included a mix from techno/house pioneer Derrick May that is incredible! The second track off of the mix from Fruit Loops samples the original MSFB song, but the whole mix is one of my favorites and definitely a classic for dance music. May’s beat juggling is also next level so make sure to listen for that.

I got that feeling!

The DC music/DJ scene has been taking off lately with a few heavy-hitters touring worldwide and releasing new, original productions on great dance music labels.  The latest to step it up is Will Eastman of the Blisspop party with his single “Feelin’,” which just dropped on Plant Music and features remixes from DC artists Nadastrom and Tittsworth.  The track really kills it live, I’ve seen Eastman drop it a few times and it sets it off.  Get the whole EP on Beatport.  Keep a look out, too, for Plant Music’s new releases. Stretch Armstrong, one of the most famous NYC hip-hop radio DJs ever, founded the label and has been supporting good party tracks from up-and-comers like Tittsworth, The Glass, and Eli Escobar.

Eastman also just compiled a mixtape for BYT which features the single as well as a bunch of other dope new dance tracks (a few of which I had on my mix from October!).  Dave Nada, of Nadastrom, just came out with a new DJ mix, as did Tittsworth and hip-hop DJ Lil’El.  These should last you for a bit!

Way 2 Fonky

source-october-1992-37-22Once I hear some new music I really love, I listen to it incessantly.  For me, right now, that’s been DJ Quik, Loose Ends, and Ghostface’s verse from “4th Chamber.”  Sometimes its hard to get up on new shit, so I try to listen to as many DJ mixes as I can, for inspiration, for a change of pace, and for pure enjoyment.  Here are some grooving mixtapes getting me in the mood!

–My newest mix, Crash Course, dropped last week.  Hip-hop, funk, and dance.

–Matthew Africa’s Best of DJ Quik mixtape is a tribute to one of the most underrated producer/rappers in the business.  Enough said.

–The Whitelight Mixes are a collection of slow-burnering mixes; electronic music but not the heavy heavy.  The new one from Andrew Allsgood is incredible!  Some amazing house music.

The Do-Over is a great weekly Sunday party thrown in my hometown of Los Angeles that I luckily had the chance of checking in early summertime.  Mike B posted up his most recent live set for the real hip-hop heads.  The Do Over blog has all the sets posted up.  I suggest Garth Trinidad, DJ Nu Mark, and King Britt.

–DC’s own Jerome Baker III posted up a live set from Local 16.  It will definitely get the party started with a good mix of different genres and party joints!

–Outside Broadcast is an super-informed blog done by Eli Escobar, Roctakon and Johnny Cocco, three NYC legends in the DJ game.  Eli posted a mix by Kon (of Kon & Amir, funk-digging fame) because of a benefit for Kon.  Real dope disco and funk edits.

–My boy DJ-TMY posted up his new disco-house joint, Twink Disco, over at his Raved-out blog.  Yes, I felt uncomfortable saying it too, but it’s still fire!

–Turntablist legend Roc Raida passed away in September.  Here is one of his old cassette joints that gives you a taste of his flavor.

–Finally, on the real deep tip, is Nadastrom, killing it from DC.  These guys remixes and original tracks are serious dance floor destroyers.  Check out their mix for DC hipster site BrightestYoungThings made for the celebration of their release party a month back.

New mixtape- Crash Course Vol. 1!

Crash course1 copyCrash Landon presents…Crash Course Vol. 1!  This is a follow up to my last mixtape The XXX-Files which dropped in March on the Underwater Peoples blog (they’re doing big things!).  The vibe on this one is more open, definitely a party mix with a good progression.  It’s really just a reflection of all the music I’ve been listening to recently and I specifically wanted these songs on here so I made them work with eachother.  I recorded this in one take on two Tecnics 1200s, a Vestax 05, and Serato, with a few songs edited on Ableton Live beforehand.  Feedback is appreciated and if you like it, holler at me about DJing an event of yours.

The music speaks for itself so I won’t say much more.  Thanks to all those who inspired the mix– all the artists on here, all the DJs I’ve seen in the last few months, the DC music scene, those who’ve passed- DJ AM, Roc Raida, Michael Jackson- and most importantly my friends and family who keep me motivated and inspired everyday!
